Acclimatizing in the Andes: A Practical Guide
Cusco, Uyuni and the Atacama all sit above 2,400 m. Here is how to arrive strong.

Most high-Andes itineraries start above 2,400 m. Give yourself at least two easy days before any serious hike, drink more water than feels necessary and keep alcohol to a minimum on arrival.
Climb high, sleep low: short acclimatization walks above your sleeping altitude help your body adapt faster. Good operators build these days into the itinerary.
Headache, nausea or unusual breathlessness are signals to slow down, not to push through. Descending is always the most effective treatment.
