Overview
Láscar is a non-technical but demanding climb: from the trailhead at 4,900 m you ascend loose volcanic scree for around three hours to the rim of a crater that still breathes sulphur fumes. The view sweeps across the Salar de Atacama, Licancabur and the Altiplano lagoons.
This ascent is ideal as a first 5,000-metre summit, but only after at least three days of acclimatisation in San Pedro. Guides carry oxygen and a satellite phone.
