Overview

Tortuguero has no roads: the trip from San José ends with a boat ride along jungle canals into a village between river and sea. Early-morning canoe outings glide through narrow channels to find caimans, river otters, howler monkeys and dozens of herons.

From July to October, licensed guides lead small night groups onto the beach to watch green turtles dig nests and lay their eggs, one of the largest nesting events in the Western Hemisphere.
